A study says that there is evidence that a keto diet might contribute to easing symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS). It suggests that a low-fat, high-carb diet may improve the quality of life of people suffering from MS, a chronic autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system affects its own tissues and harms the spinal cord and nerves.
The study by researchers and doctors from the Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Virginia, and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia release the evidence after a study on 65 people who participated in a strict Keto Diet routine for 6 months.
Their results were part of a preliminary study presented by the researchers at the 74 AGM of the Academy of Neurology.
The participants followed a strict Keto Diet routine and limited their carbohydrate intake to 20 grams a day. That is an apple or a medium-sized banana a day.
The participants depended on eggs, fish, and meat and had large servings of fat from avocado, butter, cream, olive oil, and helpings of low or non-starchy vegetables such as leafy greens.
Results Of Experiment Suggest Keto Diet Is A Promising Alternative To Expensive Medicines
83% of participants diligently followed the Keto Diet and reported significant improvement in physical and mental health. Participants suffering from MS also reported marked improvement.
The results have suggested that switching to a keto diet might be an accessible and promising alternative to medicines for certain chronic illnesses like multiple sclerosis.
Dr. J. Nicholas Brenton, a pediatric neurologist, led the study. He said there is evidence that Keto Diets could indeed be beneficial and safe. They could prove to be an inexpensive way to improve health.
After participating in the diet for 6 months, participants reported significant improvement in energy. They reported specific improvement in multiple sclerosis symptoms and said that experienced lesser disability and were able to better participate in daily routines, including walking. They also reported a loss of weight after the Keto Diet routine.
