Ingredients to Make Hand Sanitizer According to WHO

In addition to washing hands, hand sanitizer can also be a way to prevent corona virus. Hand sanitizer is useful for sterilizing hands. Unfortunately, hand sanitizers are now scarce in the market.

WHO actually recommends washing hands with soap under running water. But in certain circumstances hand sanitizer is the choice of many people because it is practical and can be taken anywhere.

Hand sanitizers can be made by yourself using ingredients that have been recommended by WHO.

The following are some of the ingredients suggested by WHO for making hand sanitizers:

1. Ethanol 96 percent

Ethanol is also called ethyl alcohol, pure alcohol or absolute alcohol. This liquid is volatile, flammable, colorless and is most often used in daily life.

Ethanol is widely used as a solvent for various chemicals shown in perfumes and medicines.

2. Glycerol 98 percent

Glycerol is the simplest glyceride compound, with hydroxyl which is hydrophilic and hygroscopic. Glycerol is a component that makes up various lipids, including triglycerides.

3. Hydrogen peroxide 3 percent

Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical in the form of clear, colorless liquid with a texture that is slightly thicker than water. Besides being used as a bleach, hydrogen peroxide is also used as an antiseptic for wounds.

4. Sterile water or distilled water

Unlike ordinary water, sterile water is water that has been through the process of filtering water by using UV light to kill germs so that it produces sterile water.

In a page titled ‘Guide to Local Production: WHO-Recommended Handrub Formulations’, WHO writes there are two recommended hand sanitizer formulas:
The following ingredients are needed to make 10 liters of hand sanitizers according to WHO standards:

Formulation 1:

  • Ethanol 96 percent, 8333 ml
  • Hydrogen peroxide 3 percent, 417 ml
  • Glycerol 98 percent, 145 ml
  • Refrigerated distilled water or boiled water

Formulation 2:

  • Isopropyl alcohol 99.8 percent, 7515 ml
  • Hydrogen peroxide 3 percent, 417 ml
  • Glycerol 98 percent, 145 ml
  • Refrigerated distilled water or boiled water

After all the ingredients are collected, the first ingredient that is first put into a bottle can is alcohol. After that, enter the measured hydrogen peroxide in a measuring flask. Pour glycerol and distilled water that has been cooled in sequence.

If all the ingredients have been put in a bottle, immediately close it to prevent alcohol from evaporating. Mix all ingredients and shake gently.

Finished hand sanitizers can be placed in 500 ml or 100 ml containers. Store in a special room temperature away from heat and fire for 72 hours before use.

Both of these formulations are the WHO standard for producing hand sanitizers of 10 liters with final concentration after mixing, (Formulation 1) 80 percent ethanol, glycerol 1.45 percent, 0.125 percent hydrogen peroxide and (Formulation 2) 75 percent isopropyl alcohol, glycerol 1, 45 percent, hydrogen peroxide 0.125 percent.

In order to prevent Covid-19, the use of antiseptics such as hand sanitizers can be used but not excessive so as not to cause skin irritation.
