MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A pregnant woman was fatally shot Sunday night in south Minneapolis. But before she died, health practitioners were successfully able to deliver her daughter or son.
The Minneapolis Police Department says the shooting happened around 9:15 p.m. at the intersection of 37th Street and Elliot Avenue — just a block from the George Floyd memorial site.
Investigators say Leneesha Columbus was inside a car when she was shot. Officers found her at the scene, and she was delivered to Hennepin Healthcare for treatment.
Doctors were able to deliver her daughter or son, but the woman died briefly thereafter.
One of Leneesha’s closest friends and her daughter marveled at the memorial now create at the intersection.
The friend, who asked to remain anonymous, shook her head in disbelief.
“I don’t understand why people would take her life, I don’t, I don’t,” she said.
Leneesha’s mother Ladell Turnipseed described her daughter as a lovable mother to a 5-year-old and 1-year-old.
“This a nightmare. This is a mother’s nightmare,” Turnipseed said.
Police say they’re looking into different motives, but Leneesha’s mother believes it had been domestic violence that has stolen their family’s peace.
Officer Garrett Parten, a police spokesman, says here is the city’s 29th homicide this season. The vehicle that the victim was inside has been towed as part of the investigation.

Another shooting Sunday night happened near where in fact the pregnant woman was shot. The victim walked in to Hennepin Healthcare overnight. Investigators are currently treating this as a separate incident.
Sunday night’s shootings are the latest in what’s been a violent week-end in Minneapolis.
Also on Saturday night, a shooting injured four people in Brooklyn Park, just north of Minneapolis.
Everyone hurt in these Saturday incidents is expected to survive.
