Although Lionel Messi put Barcelona back on level terms against Real Betis, it was Francisco Trincao who scored a sublime goal to put them on the top. The club from Catalunya might have won the match- but they still look shaky, something Real Betis capitulated twice throughout the match. If not for Messi’s magic, and Trincao’s heroics, the team would have lost again- not the first time in a forgettable league season.

Trincao Scores For Barcelona On His 17th Appearance

Ronald Koeman’s decision to bench both Messi and Frenkie de Jong fell flat after Barcelona conceded a goal to a Borja Iglesias strike. While one could stake a claim that this decision was to keep them healthy and fit for the semi-final of the Copa del Rey- the Catalan giants can’t afford to take chances. As it goes, the talisman managed to level the playing field. In the end, he also ended up releasing Jordi Alba- which led to Victor Ruiz pushing the ball in his own team’s net.

Although Ruiz did compensate for his mistake with a header in the 75th minute, Trincao ensured Barcelona had the last laugh. The Portuguese football hammered in a shot that ricocheted from the crossbar in the 87th minute. In a post-match interview, Trincao spoke about how it was necessary to show up for the team- rather than for his own self.

Barcelona has clawed back to second place in the La Liga standings– as they stand 7 points behind Atletico Madrid who also have a two game advantage.

In their Copa del Rey quarter final the Catalans managed to come back from a very precarious position. With Granada managing to overpower them for a short time with two extra goals, the Catalan giants managed to score 5, and take the game home. Barcelona have been winning matches due to individual brilliance- which has been hiding their shambolic defence.
