Jaume Plensa in Tamanyan Park

After a late night, it was an early morning. I took my older daughter to school, stopped at my parents' apartment to drop something off, and returned a Los Angeles-area phone call (while it was still a decent hour 12 time zones away) as I walked down Moskovian Street toward the bus stop. Suddenly I noticed something new and incredible had appeared in Tamanyan Park.

Right there in the middle of what is now the Cafesjian Sculpture Garden at Tamanyan Park was a semitransparent three-dimensional work of art. As I approached, I saw it was a gorgeous work by Jaume Plensa. I had to get off the phone to snap this photo. (In the background is Fernando Botero's popular Roman Warrior.)

The excitement is building up as the November 7-8 Grand Opening of the Cafesjian Center for the Arts approaches. Seeing this work in the park, I felt like the Center had already, in its own way, improved the quality of life in our capital city.
