Arts brief: 100 years of Babken Kolozyan’s art

Yerevan - An honored and revered painter of the 20th century, Babken Kolozyan (1909-1994) left behind an impressive body of work.

He began his career as a painter in the 1930s after graduating from the Leningrad Academy of the Arts in 1938. Babken Kolozyan was also one of the founders of the Institute of Dramatic Arts in Yerevan, serving as the head of the department of painting until 1970.

Over a span of 60 years of artistic expression, he painted still lifes, landscapes, and portraits. He is also the author of many articles and works about art.

Babken Kolozyan had five solo exhibitions in his lifetime, in 1945, 1959, 1966, 1980, and 1989 and also participated in many other exhibitions in Armenia, Russia, and other countries. An exhibition was organized after his death in 2001, celebrating the artist's legacy.

On the occasion of the centennial of his birth, a selection of his paintings will be on exhibit in Armenia, beginning on October 1 at the Armenian Artists' Union in Yerevan.
