Yerevan - Armenia will be taking part in the 53rd International Art Exhibition, known as the Venice Biennale, one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world. Ever since its founding in 1895, the Venice Biennale has been on the cutting edge of the art world, promoting new artistic trends and organizing multidisciplinary international events in the contemporary arts. Today, the Biennale has over 300,000 visitors.

For the eighth consecutive year, Armenia's Ministry of Culture has appointed the  Armenian Center for Contemporary Experimental Art (ACCEA or NPAK, its Armenian acronym) to organize the official pavilion of Armenia at the Biennale. Architect Dr. Edward Balassanian, co-founder of NPAK, has been appointed the commissioner of the Armenian Pavilion as well as its curator.

Gayané Khachaturian, a Georgian-Armenian artist will represent Armenian contemporary art at the Venice Biennale.

The Mekhitarian Armenian Congregation will host the Armenian Pavilion at Moorat Raphael Armenian College, as it has for the past seven years. As in previous years, the honorary commissioner of the Armenian Pavilion will be Mr. Jean Boghossian, a national benefactor and philanthropist.

Works presented at the pavilion have been loaned by the Parajanov Museum of Yerevan and through private collectors Bagrat Nikogosyan, Artashes Aleksanyan, and Valerie Khanukaev, in memory of his son Roman Khanukaev.

This year's Venice Biennale will take place from June 7 to November 22 in the Giardini and Arsenale exhibition venues and also throughout the city of Venice. The theme of this year's exhibition is "Making Worlds." It will be directed by Daniel Birnbaum. Two Golden Lions for lifetime achievement  will be awarded to Yoko Ono and John Baldessari - two of the most important artists of our time.

Dr. Balassanian said that NPAK has organized a drive to raise funds to implement this project. "The global financial crisis has hampered the fund-raising effort drastically. Contributions of any size will be highly appreciated and will save the day. I cannot stress the gravity of the situation more," he explained.
