While people around the world were taking down their Christmas trees at the conclusion of another holiday season, the teachers and students of the Sipan Armenian School were just beginning to decorate the tree and social hall for their Annual Christmas Party. Sipan students had intended to have their Christmas program on December 19, but due to inclement weather, it was postponed.
The delay did not discourage the students or family members. At 7:00 p.m. on January 9, the students, dressed in Christmas colors, gathered around a Christmas tree in the social hall and began singing Christmas carols, hoping that their voices could reach the ears of Santa who was walking down the wings of the church ready to join them in their celebration.
The Christmas program began with Principal Arpi Kevorkian's greetings. Santa then entered the festively decorated social hall. The students welcomed him with songs, dances, and poetry recitations. Family members cheered them on with their clapping while cameras flashed and camcorders recorded. At the end of the program each student received a present from Santa. Everyone enjoyed a delicious lasagna dinner with salad and various types of desserts, spread out buffet style in the back of the hall.
Sipan Armenian School may have been Santa's last stop for this season, but thanks to the spirited students and audience, it was clearly the best one. As the saying goes, the best is always saved for last.
Sipan Armenian School offers pre-nursery to seventh grade instruction. All classes are bilingual for those who do not know how to speak Armenian very well. The classes are held on Friday evenings at the Armenian Presbyterian Church in Paramus.
