From Armenia in brief: Hovik Abrahamian elected as Speaker of the National Assembly

Yerevan - On September 29, Hovik Abrahamian, member of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), was elected by secret ballot as the new Speaker of Armenia's National Assembly. Larissa Alaverdian of the Heritage Party was also nominated for the position. She received 5 votes, while Mr. Abrahamian received 110 votes.

According to Armenpress, Mr. Abrahamian took his oath as a newly elected member of parliament and then presented his program. He stressed the necessity of mutual respect and tolerance, and espoused an atmosphere of partnership.

The former Speaker of the National Assembly Tigran Torossian, had been ousted out by his party, which designates the Speaker according to the coalition agreement.

Mr. Torossian later resigned from the RPA.
